Becoming Kingston Environment Centre -part 1

Yesterday we interviewed John Trend on Kingston Green Radio. He is starting a new youth-orientated charity shop here on the High Street , with the Charity “Oxygen”. It turned out he was a youth worker in this very building a few years back, which prompted us to look at some old photos which are still knocking about. These show the transformation of the building fromĀ a derelict public toilet pictured in 1999. We have loads of pictures showing youngsters giving up their free time, laying concrete, putting up the fence, clearing years of accumulated rubbish, painting and fitting out the interior.

This is not and never has been a commercial building. We are launching our campaign to retain this building as a much loved community centre and environmental hub.

Derelict toilet about 1999

the back yard was a dumping ground
fencing off the yard, later used for games – eg basketball
young people learnt important skills helping lay concrete
painting – the entire building was painted a handsome yellow
the youth centre offered sessions several times a week for many years, plus outings, advice and referrals
